Mon 28 June 2021 | 10:44

The former Bayern Munich midfielder believes the Germans have faced more powerful opponents than England in their road to the knockout stage.

Germany

progressed to the round of 16 by finishing as Group F runner-ups behind France. The Germans displayed great form in their 4-2 victory against Portugal, but their underwhelming performance against Hungary saw them being criticized by German media. Former Germany international

Stefan Effenberg

believes

England

are Die Mannschaft’s easiest opponents so far in the tournament.

"I think England will be our easiest opponents so far,"

the former Germany midfielder told

Sport1

.

"In the group, we had world champions France, European champions Portugal and Hungary as incredibly difficult opponents.

"We survived it."

Asked about England’s performances in the tournament, Effenberg responded:

"The English have not yet really had an impact on the tournament and the attack around Harry Kane - which distinguishes them - has not appeared at all,

"So, I'm sure we will win the game. The pressure is on the English. You play at home. Even if it's a young team, they are expected to win the title."

25 years after their historic win over England in Euro 96 semi-finals, Germany will face the Three Lions once again at Wembley on Tuesday.
