Wed 23 June 2021 | 21:40

Euro 2016 finalists both secured knockout stages with a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night, with France finishing top of Group F and Portugal second.

France

went into the game to revenge their Euro 2016 defeat in the final game against

Portugal

but they were held to a draw against defending European champions.

The game was level at the half-time break, with former

Real Madrid

teammates

Cristiano Ronaldo

and

Karim Benzema

both converting their penalties for their sides.

Portugal

opened the scoring in 31 minutes through

Cristiano Ronaldo

’s penalty, after

Danilo

had been caught by

Hugo Lloris

in the air as the pair challenged for a deep free-kick.

It looked like

Fernando Santos

’ men would lead at the break, but France were awarded a penalty in stoppage time after

Mbappe

and

Semedo

ran into each other in the box and

Benzema

stepped up to convert his penalty.

Benzema

doubled France's lead after the interval, getting a fantastic pass from

Paul Pogba

over the defense, and sent the ball with a low shot to beat the Portugal keeper.

However, Ronaldo scored the equalizer for his team with another goal from the penalty spot following a whistle for handball on France's

Jules Kounde

.

France had the chance to leave the game as winners, but

Patricio

’s impressive saves on

Pogba

and

Antoine Griezmann

’s strikes kept the scoreline level.

France

will face

Switzerland

in the last 16 on Monday, while

Portugal

qualify as one of the best third-placed teams and play against

Belgium

on Sunday.
