Italy PM wants Euro 2020 final moved from Wembley to Rome

Mario Draghi believes UEFA must change the venue due to England’s rising coronavirus infections.

Euro 2020 final is set to take place on 11 July at Wembley Stadium in London. The UK government added the fixture to their Events Research Programme last month, which will let the stadium be half-full for the match. However, Italy's Prime Minister

Mario Draghi

wants the final to be moved from Wembley to Rome due to England’s increasing number of coronavirus patients.

“Yes... I will try to stop the final being held in a country where infections are rising quickly,"

Draghi said.

He added:

"I advocate that the final should not take place in a country in which the risk of infection is very big,"

German chancellor Angela Merkel has also expressed her concern about the rise of Delta variant cases in Britain. On Monday, Italy reported 495 new coronavirus cases, while the UK recorded 10,633 cases. According to

ANSA

, UEFA is not interested in changing the venue. UEFA officials are reportedly working with the English authorities to organize the semi-finals and the final at Wembley.
