Croatia 1-1 Czech Republic:Schick puts Czech a step closer to last 16
Croatia and Czech Republic had to settle for a point each after a disappointing 1-1 draw that leaves Group D in balance.
Croatia
were beaten 1-0 by
England
at Wembley in their opening Group D fixture on Sunday as
Raheem Sterling
’s goal gave
Gareth Southgate
’s side some measure of revenge for their painful semi-final defeat in Russia three years ago.
The 2018 World Cup finalists needed to get their Euro 2020 campaign on track this evening as they met the
Czech Republic
at Hampden Park in Glasgow.
But they were dealt a huge blow when the Czechs were awarded a penalty after a VAR check for
Dejan Lovren
making contact with
Patrik Schick
’s nose.
It appeared to be a natural movement as the former
Liverpooldefender was jumping. However,
Schick
was hurt in the challenge and the referee gave a penalty upon second viewing.
Schick picked himself up and sent the ball into the bottom corner and move to the top of the tournament's goalscoring chart with his third goal.
Croatia roared out of the traps in the second half and restored parity with a fine goal from
Ivan Perisic
.
Perisic
, restored to the left flank, was played in down the channel and cut in on his right foot, curling a powerful effort into the far corner, becoming the first Croatian to score at four major tournaments after goals at the last two World Cups and at Euro 2016.
The result left the Czechs with four points from their two games and a step closer to securing their place in the last 16. They take on
England
in their final game at Wembley on Tuesday.
However, the situation is more pressing for Croatia. They face
Scotland
at Hampden Park in their final match knowing defeat would end their campaign, while victory would put them in a good position to reach the knockouts.
