Portugal kick off Euro 2020 with a 3-goal victory over Hungary

at the renovated Puskás Aréna in their first match of the Euro 2020 on Tuesday.

The two teams have previously faced each other 13 times in different occasions, in all of which Portugal have never lost a single game. The last time the two teams faced each other in a European competition was in Euro 2016 group stage, when they settled for a 3-3 draw.

Tonight, Portugal who lost many chances during the match, finally managed to defeat the opponent with three goals to pave their way to the top of the Group F table.

As expected, Portugal got off to a better start and were about to score their first goal in the fifth minute, but Diogo Jota’s shot from inside the box was met with a reaction from Hungary goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi.

Few minutes later, Bruno Fernandes’ long pass was met with an inaccurate shot from teammate, Diogo Jota, which went over the bar.

minute, Silva floated a cross into the box, however, Cristiano Ronaldo's header sent the ball wide of the far post.

In the 37th minute, Schafer leaped for a header coming from a free-kick from the left side, which was easily saved by Patricio.

In the final moments of the first half, Jota’s cross was met with a shot from Ronaldo, which went over the bar from close range, and the first half ended in a goalless draw.

In the early moments of the second half, Fernandes swung a corner into the box. Pepe leaped and sent the ball into the post with a powerful header, but Gulácsi blocked it with a spectacular reaction.

minute was turning point for the Seleção, when Guerreiro stuck a deflected ball to the back of Hungary’s net to give the lead to Fernando Santos’ men in the final moments of the game.

Two minutes later, Rafa was dragged down in the Hungary’s box, which led the referee to point straight to the penalty spot.

Ronaldo got behind the ball and doubled Portugal’s lead with an accurate shot to the right corner.  

In the 92

minute, Ronaldo left Gulácsi behind in a one-on-one situation and sent the ball into the back of the empty net to triple Portugal’s lead and score his sixth goal in the last four matches he played against the National Eleven.

Portugal, who are leading in the Group F table with one game more than France and Germany, will face

Germany

in their second Euro 2020 match on Saturday.

Hungary will also host the 2018 World Cup champions,
