Boateng: ‘At the Euros, we will see a hungry Timo’

Jerome Boateng expects to see Timo Werner back to his best for Germany at Euro 2020.

Since

Timo Werner

joined

Chelsea

from RB Leipzig for £47.5 million last summer, he has not been able to live up to the supporters' expectations. He went through a difficult season as he was struggling to replicate his prolific form when he was at Red Bull Arena.

However, he was able to play a key role in the Blues' run to Champions League glory and

Jerome Boateng

, who will not be alongside his compatriot at

Euro 2020

, believes Werner will “show who he really is” at the tournament.

"Timo has changed country, club, playing in a new league,"

Boateng told

BILD

.

"It is not so easy. Nonetheless, he scored his goals, provided assists, was present, went through a hollow and came out and now he’s the Champions League winner.

"For me, it has been a positive season with the usual ups and downs. It makes him bigger and stronger and he learns from it.

"At the Euros, we will see another Timo Werner, a hungry Timo. A Timo with more arrogance, because he has just won the Champions League. It carries you. He will show who he really is."

Werner made 52 appearances for Chelsea last season during which he was only able to score 12 goals, including just six in the

Premier League

.

He also endured a 14-game goalless streak in the Premier League between November and February and finally was able to get back on track in their 2-0 win against Newcastle.

At the international level, he has made 39 appearances during which he has been able to score 16 goals and his latest game was Germany’s 7-1 win over Latvia in a pre-Euros friendly.

It seems his continued presence could prove crucial as they seek to qualify from their group which contains World champions France, current holders Portugal, and Hungary.
