Deschamps is eager to continue with France

Sun 06 June 2021 | 12:21

Didier Deschamps’ contract with France national team will run out next year, but the World Cup winner does not plan to depart his role.

Didier Deschamps

insisted that he is eager to keep going as France coach even after his contract expires next year. The 52-year-old helped France reach the European Championship final and delievered World Cup victory in his nine-year tenure as their manager.

Deschamps, along with Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer, has delivered World Cup glory as both a player and a coach. Should he lead France to Euro 2020 success, he will make history as he would be the only player to have won both the World Cup and the Euros as a player and coach.

It may also be his last time to manage France with his contract running out in 2022, when the Qatar World Cup reaches a climax.

The French tactician, however, has no plans to leave his role as long as the French Football Federation backs him.

"

I may continue after 2022 with the agreement of my president,"

Deschamps told RTL.

"People have to want to keep me and for that you need results. I will do something else at some point, but I am thriving in this role of manager.

"I have a contract until December 2022, but today I am not thinking of becoming a club coach. I am very happy, all the conditions are met."

Deschamps guided his side in 112 games during his time at the helm, which started in 2012 after Laurent Blanc resigned. He has delivered 74 victories, 18 defeats and drew 20 matches.

France will go against Bulgaria in their last friendly before the Euro 2020 starts for them on June 15 against Germany.
