Matthaus slams Guardiola for his tactical decisions against Chelsea

The Bayern legend believes the Spaniard deserves 'harsh criticism' for his side’s performance in the Champions League final.

Manchester City

were defeated 1-0 by

Chelsea

in the Champions League final on Saturday.

Kai Havertz

’s goal in the first half was enough for

Thomas Tuchel

’s team to achieve European glory.

Pep Guardiola

’s decision to omit

Fernandinho

and

Rodri

from his side’s starting line-up was criticized as the Citizens’ backline was exposed to the Blues’ long-range passes.

Lothar Matthaus

believes Guardiola’s job at the Etihad Stadium might be in danger after the tactical blunder.

"With his line-up he stole the Champions League from the club and the fans and he has to rightly listen to the harsh criticism from all sides,"

the Bayern Munich legend told

Sky Germany

.

"I am sure that there will be internal discussions about whether to part with him. The players will doubt him since that final.

"He had to try something again, present an imaginary ingenuity at the worst possible moment and totally deserved to lose.”

Guardiola was defeated by Tuchel, who used the Spaniard’s overthinking against him. The German coach started the game with a close-knit 3-4-2-1 formation that prevented City’s midfielders from joining the attacks.

"How can you play without a defensive midfielder in the most important game in club history, who was on the pitch in almost every game of the season, who ensures the balance, who gives everyone involved the necessary security?

"Why did he leave Rodri and/or Fernandinho out, start six attacking players and also play without a centre-forward?"

Despite failing to win the Champions League, Guardiola’s future at the Etihad Stadium is unlikely to be in serious danger. The former

Bayern Munich

coach won his third Premier League title with the Citizens last season and managed to add the fourth successive Carabao Cup title to his silverware cabinet.
