Footballers with Most Own Goals in the Premier League History

To score a goal is one thing and to score an own goal is another thing, though both are counted toward a footballer’s goals. In this post, we are to Premier League own goals record or in other words most own goals in Premier League of all time. Who are top own goal scorers in EPL history?

Well, no doubt that own goals are mostly scored by defenders. The same thing is true about the Premier League. We mean top own goal scorers in EPL history are all defenders. But the question is how many own goals have they scored?

Do the

most own goals scored by a player in Premier League history

reach 10 or even higher? Are you going to be surprised by Premier League own goals record? And who is at the top of the list of most own goals scored by a player in Premier League history?

Most Own Goals in the Premier League History

We just let you know about 15 players who have scored most own goals in the Premier League history. The rest we will also let you know but only through a bullet-pointed list not to go beyond the limits of your patience. Stay with us!

Richard Dunne (10)

Standing on the top of the list of footballers with most own goals in the Premier League history, Richard Dunne is a 41-year-old Irish footballer who scored 10 own goals during his career which was all spent in the Premier League. We wonder how he is still alive today! Just imagine he was in Columbia; but fortunately he was in England and they don’t kill people for scoring own goals in England!

Concerning the number of own goals Dunne scored, Manchester City was the unluckiest among the clubs Dunne served in his career. He actually scored 6 own goals when with them! Three of the four remaining own goals Dunne scored when with

Aston Villa

and the last one when with Queens Park Rangers in a 3-2 loss to Liverpool.

Jamie Carragher (7)

The second footballer with most own goals in the Premier League history, Jamie Carragher is a 43-year-old retired English defender who scored 7 own goals during his career and since he was a one-club man, you can surely guess that all his own goals goes to that one club! What is that unlucky club?! Liverpool.

The most highlighted own goals Carragher scored were the two goals he scored against his own team, Liverpool, in a game against Manchester United in 1999-2000 season. These goals actually caused him to be never used again as a center back but as a right back. The interesting fact about Carragher is that he scored more than twice as much own goals as straight goals during his career: 7 vs 3.

Phil Jagielka (7)

Currently playing for Sheffield United, Phil Jagielka is another footballer on the list of

top own goal scorers in EPL history

who, with 7 goals, shares the second place on the list with Jamie Carragher, however, fortunately, he has scored more straight goals than own goals: 41 which is far beyond the shameful results of Carragher!

From among all Jagielka’s own goals, three were scored when he was with Everton and one when with

Sheffield United

; he also scored an own goal when serving the English . Maybe the worst own goal Jagielka scored was the one he scored in a match against Leeds United which caused Sheffield United to lose the game 2-1 and actually experience their 24th defeat in the Premier League.

Martin Skrtel (7)

One of the few footballers from Slovakia on the list of footballers with most own goals in the Premier League history, Martin Skrtel is actually the third footballer to share the second place on the list with Carragher and Jagielka with 7 goals.

And it is again Liverpool that takes all the burden, though Skrtel served other clubs such as Zenit St. Petersburg, Fenerbahçe, and

Atalanta

during his career! He actually scored all his 7 own goals when with Liverpool and even set the record of most own goals in a single Premier League season when he scored his fourth own goal in the major English league 2013-14 season in the Liverpool 2-1 win against Newcastle United.

Wes Brown (6)

And here comes the first footballer on the list of

footballers with most own goals in the Premier League history

with 6 own goals: Wes Brown; a 41-year-old retired footballer who served Manchester United for the majority of his career, but not all his own goals were scored when he was with the Red Devils.

Brown also scored an own goal when with

Sunderland

- actually in 2010-11 season - and the interesting fact here is that the same own goal was scored against his former club, Manchester United, resulting in the opposing team 1-0 victory.

Jonny Evans (6)

And here comes the next footballer on the list of footballers with most own goals in Premier League of all time: Jonny Evans. He is actually the first Irish footballer on the list and also at the top of the list with 6 own goals scored in the Premier League.

Although Evans served Manchester United for a major part of his career, not all of his goals were scored when he was with the Premier League club. Part of the Leicester City team, he actually scored an own goal against

AFC Bournemouth

in July 2020 in a match that ended in Leicester City’s 4-1 loss. He also headed an own goal against Liverpool in a match in November 2020 that saw Leicester City lose 3-0 to the Reds.

Ryan Shawcross (6)

Currently with the American club,

Inter Miami

, Ryan Shawcross is a 33-year-old English defender who spent most of his career in the Premier League, majorly with Stoke City, and also scored all his 6 own goals in the same league.

One of Shawcross’ own goals was actually the goal he scored in a match against Liverpool in January 2014 and in the very 5th minute. The game actually ended in Stoke City’s 5-3 loss to the Reds. Thanks to Shawcross’ early own goal! He also scored an own goal in an away match against AFC Bournemouth in May 2017 which denied his team victory and brought the game to a 2-2 draw, and another one in a game against Tottenham which gave Tottenham the edge and ended in Stoke City’s 1-0 loss.

Frank Sinclair (6)

One of the few Jamaican and also the last footballer on the list of footballers with most own goals in the Premier League history with 6 own goals, Frank Sinclair is a 49-year-old retired defender who served several clubs during his career, but mostly Premier League clubs including Chelsea and

Leicester City

.

Although Sinclair did not score more than 6 own goals during his career, he was badly reputed because of that. You know why? Because he actually scored two of these goals in two consecutive weeks in 1999 and for the Premier League club, Leicester City. He also held the record for

most own goals in the Premier League history

for some time before his record was broken by the top-lister, Richard Dunne.

Henning Berg (5)

The first footballer on the list of footballers with most own goals in the Premier League history with 5 own goals, Henning Berg is a 51-year-old retired Norwegian footballer who served the Premier League club, Manchester United and

Blackburn Rovers

, during his career.

The interesting fact about Henning Berg is that he scored around the same straight goals (6) for the above-mentioned clubs as the own goals he scored for them - with only a deference of one goal. One of the own goals Berg scored while with Man Utd was in a match against Newcastle United in August 1999 where Manchester United beat the Magpies 5-1.

Scott Dann (5)

Delving more into

Premier League own goals records

, we reach a 34-year-old English defender who is still in the business and serving the Premier League club, Crystal Palace: Scott Dann. They say Dann scored all his 5 own goals in 138 appearances that he made in the Premier League.

Based on what we said above, Dann has scored one own goal in every 28 appearances he had in the Premier League, and since most of his Premier League appearances has been for Crystal Palace, he must have scored most of his own goals with the Premier League club. But that’s not true! Although Dann has made more appearances for the Eagles, it is

Birmingham City

and Blackburn Rovers that get a share of Dann’s own goals: Blackburn Rovers 3 and Birmingham City 2.

Michael Duberry (5)

Yet another English defender on the list of footballers with most own goals in the Premier League history, Michael Duberry is a 45-year-old retired footballer who is a product of Chelsea and served the same club and another Premier League club, namely Leeds United, more than any other club during his career.

Duberry scored a total of 10 goals during his career - we mean straight goals - and as you know 5 own goals - actually half of his straight goals. Maybe the most appealing own goals Duberry scored were the ones he scored in a match against Hereford United. He was on

Oxford United

side, scored two own goals and finally a goal for his side to register a hat-trick in a game that ended in a 2-2 draw!

Lewis Dunk (5)

Like some other footballers on the list, this man - we mean Lewis Dunk - is still in the business and have still some years ahead of him to move the record of

most own goals scored by a player in Premier League history

! He’s actually 29 years old and is both a product of the English club, Brighton and Hove Albion, and has been serving the same club since 2010 as a senior player.

As you might have guessed, Dunk has scored all his own goals with

Brighton and Hove Albion

. One of these goals were scored in Brighton’s first Premier League match in 2017-18 season against Manchester City which ended in their 2-1 defeat. Dunk actually set a record of own goals in the same season jointly with Martin Skertel who is now second on the list of most own goal scorers in the Premier League history: Both scored 4 goals in the same season with Dunk’s fourth own goals scored in a match against Swansea City which ended in Brighton’s 4-1 home defeat.

Rio Ferdinand (5)

Despite being on the list of footballers with most own goals in the Premier League history, Ferdinand is also among the best defenders Manchester United has ever had. He also served other Premier League clubs such as Leeds United, Queens Park Rangers, and West Ham United during his playtime and scored a total of 13 goals for them - overall with the number of goals he scored for Manchester United.

But what about his own goals? Well, one of these goals Ferdinand scored in a Premier League match against Portsmouth in 2006-07 season which ended in Man Utd 2-1 defeat and in spite of all’s surprise because Man Utd were actually Premier League leaders at the time. Another of Ferdinand’s own goals were scored while he was still at

Leeds United

in a match against Liverpool in 2002 which ended in Leeds 4-0 defeat.

Federico Fernandez (5)

And here comes the only Argentinian footballer on the list of

footballers with most own goals in Premier League of all time

: Federico Fernandez. He’s 32 years old by now and currently serving the Premier League club, Newcastle United. He has made a total of 437 appearances and has scored 14 goals until now (April 2021) for all the clubs he has played for that are not limited to Premier League ones.

As for Federico Fernandez’s own goals, we should say one of them was scored in a match against Chelsea in 2015-16 season when Fernandez was on Swansea City’s side. The match, fortunately, did not end in Swansea City’s defeat but a 2-2 draw despite Fernandez’s own goal. Another of Fernandez’s own goals was scored in a match against Manchester City when Fernandez was - and still is - serving Newcastle United. The match ended in a 5-0 humiliating defeat for Newcastle United.

Zat Knight (5)

Another Premier League prolific own goal scorer, Zat Knight is a 40-year-old retired English footballer - actually defender - who served Fulham more than any other club during his career, though he made the most number of his career appearances for Bolton Wanderers; actually 191 appearances which is 10 more than his appearances for

Fulham

. And he scored the same number of goals (4) for both clubs.

Well, as for Knight’s own goals, we should say one of them was scored in a match against Sunderland and almost near full time which actually handed Sunderland a sweet victory over Bolton Wanderers. They say Knight scored one own goal in every 30 appearances he made for Fulham which actually makes up the rest of his own goals.
