Liverpool’s secret clause in Coutinho’s transfer to Barcelona

Sat 20 March 2021 | 13:56

Barcelona signed Philippe Coutinho in 2018, but Liverpool made sure back then that the Catalans would not buy another Liverpool player for a while.

Barcelona

paid a staggering €160m to sign

Coutinho

from

Liverpool

in 2018 but since his move to the Nou Camp things have not gone according to plan for the Brazilian, and he looks to be on the way out in the future.

Philippe Coutinho has proved to be an expensive signing for Barcelona and now it is starting to look like one of the worst transfer of all time, with a new clause has come to light in the transfer.

In addition to a number of bonus-related clauses that have seen Liverpool make a few quid in the years since the sale, Liverpool sporting director,

Michael Edwards

, included a unique clause that all-but prevented Barcelona from signing Reds players until 2021. Barcelona would have to pay a premium of €93m on top of any transfer fee to sign a player from Liverpool.

Joan Laporta

is keen to push Coutinho out of the exit door as he is looking to offload Coutinho to cut their losses and avoid paying anything further. Coutinho’s market value at the moment is in the region of €40m.
