Barca set to take drastic action to avoid paying Liverpool

Fri 12 February 2021 | 0:05

Barcelona have decided to freeze Philippe Coutinho out of their team for the rest of the season to save £4.3m.

A paragraph in

Coutinho

’s deal specifies that when he played a certain number of games for

Barca

, they have to pay the club they signed him from, Liverpool.

The Brazilian picked up an injury in Barcelona’s 1-1 tie against Eibar at Camp Nou, their last game of 2020.

Coutinho

has played 14 matches so far this season, netting three goals and providing two assists.

Coutinho

started the season in amazing form right after a Champions League-winning loan time with Bayern Munich last season.

He was injured at the  start, however, and in his absence, Pedri took his place, Martin Braithwaite started to fill the central attacker and Lionel Messi played deeper.

This narrowed the space available to the Carioca upon his return, and he tried to advance himself in the manner in which he did in the early part of the season.
