Hummels: ‘Moukoko is already really good’

Wed 06 January 2021 | 19:21

Mats Hummels believes Youssoufa Moukoko is one of the best young players of that age in the squad and has the kind of potential and talents that Mario Götze, Toni Kroos, and Christian Pulisic had.

Youssoufa Moukoko

set two records in November and December as he first became the youngest player to feature in the

Bundesliga

and then he became the youngest player to score in Germany’s top flight.

Moukoko is now back to training after a knee issue and is preparing for the game against

RB Leipzig

.

"He's already really good,"

Borussia Dortmund

defender

Mats Hummels

. "I saw Toni Kroos play at 16 or 17, Mario Götze and Christian Pulisic too. Youssoufa is definitely one of the best young players of that age in the squad that I've played with.”

Hummels had played alongside Real Madrid midfielder Kroos when they were teenagers at Bayern Munich.

Moukoko deputized when Erling Haaland was unavailable because of injury before Christmas and was only 16 years and 28 days old when he scored his first senior goal against Union Berlin.

"Erling makes deep runs in behind that hurt any opponent," Hummels said.

"He always wants to threaten the opposing goal so he's a weapon in our game. The other lads in attack prefer to play the last pass, which is their strength. That's why Youssoufa did us good in the end upfront because he's a similar forward to Erling.

"Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, and Youssoufa Moukoko are young players who are really determined - and know what's required on the pitch to win.”
