Tottenham defender Emerson Royal to undergo knee surgery

Brazil and Tottenham defender Emerson Royal will undergo surgery on a knee injury.

Tottenham announced on Tuesday that Emerson Royal will miss the rest of the season after he undergoes surgery on a left knee injury.

Royal suffered a knee injury in Brazil's 2-1 friendly defeat to Morocco on Saturday, after a challenge from Sofyan Amrabat.

Tottenham said in a statement:

"We can confirm that Emerson Royal suffered a meniscus injury to his left knee while on international duty with Brazil last week.

"The defender will undergo surgery before beginning his rehabilitation with our medical staff.”

Emerson Royal has played in 32 matches for Tottenham this season, including 23 starts. The 24-year-old defender, who joined the north London club from Barcelona in August 2021, has scored twice this season.

Tottenham appointed Cristian Stellini as their new acting head coach on Sunday, following the departure of Antonio Conte by mutual consent. Spurs are in fourth place in the Premier League table after 28 matches this season.

Reports suggest that Mauricio Pochettino is open to returning to Tottenham next season, but the club also has been linked with Marco Silva and Julian Nagelsmann.
