Kane breaks Rooney's goalscoring record for England

Harry Kane broke England's goal-scoring record by scoring a penalty against Italy

Comparatively, Harry Kane was a late starter in terms of international success compared to Wayne Rooney, whom he has surpassed as

England

's all-time leading goalscorer.

Kane made his first appearance at a major international competition at the age of 22, while Rooney had already been named in the Team of the Tournament at Euro 2004 when he was just 18.

Kane could have surpassed Rooney's record of 53 goals at the 2022 World Cup. During the quarter-final against France, Kane had already scored a penalty, and with England trailing 2-1, he had the opportunity to take another penalty at Al Bayt Stadium.

It is noteworthy that Kane's penalty miss in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final against France led to England's exit, making it more appropriate that he would break Rooney's record by scoring from the penalty spot.

Kane

achieved this feat in England's first match of 2023, putting them 2-0 ahead against Italy. He scored his 54th goal for the national team, surpassing Rooney's previous record of 53 goals.
