Southampton sack manager Nathan Jones after 14 games

Nathan Jones has been sacked by Southampton after just three months in charge.

Southampton

announced on Sunday that they have decided to sack Nathan Jones after their 2-1 defeat against 10-man Wolves on Saturday. Southampton is at the bottom of the table after 22 matches, four points clear of

Premier League

safety.

Southampton said in a statement on Sunday morning:

“Southampton Football Club can confirm it has parted company with men’s first team manager Nathan Jones.

“First team coaches Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan have also left the club.

“First team lead coach Ruben Selles will take charge of training and prepare the team ahead of next weekend’s game against Chelsea.”

The 49-year-old Jones left Luton Town to replace Ralph Hasenhuttl in November on a three-and-a-half-year contract, but lost seven of his eight Premier League games in charge.

Jones’s relationship with Southampton fans broke down after his side's 3-0 defeat to Brentford, when he said he had compromised his principles because of pressure from fans.

He also claimed that:

"statistically, there weren't many better than me around Europe in terms of aggression, clean sheets, defending the box, balls in the box, xG, all those sorts of things".
