Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal: Pep Guardiola draws first blood in contest with Arteta

Manchester City moves past Arsenal in FA Cup’s fourth round with a goal from Nathan Ake.

Premier League’s two main title contenders faced each other for the first time this season but in the FA Cup, where Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City were ultimately the winners.

In a quiet night for Citizens’ main man Erling Haaland, Man City managed to grind out a result at home with a goal from their defender, Nathan Ake.

Arteta’s men actually started the match pretty well, as they always do, and had the majority of the possession in the opening 30 minutes. Tomyiasu shot his powerful shot stopped by Ortega early on and then there were some close calls with Eddie Nketiah.

However, Guardiola’s men took charge of the game after that and forced Arsenal into a defensive block. The second half saw the Citizens assert more control over the game and finally after some changes in both sides, Julian Alvarez, who came on in the second half, managed to hit the post. The rebound then fell into Grealish who passed it to

and the Dutch defender slotted the ball into the bottom right corner of the Arsenal goal.

Arsenal

then tried to push on by bringing in players like Martinelli and Odegaard but besides a few half-chances they never really posed a threat as City ultimately managed to lock the game down by having the majority of the possession.

Ultimately, the game was won by the Citizens, with Arteta having changed more than half of his starting eleven while Guardiola only changed one. The Citizens now move on to the next round, knowing that they can actually beat the league leader which may be a big boost in their next two contests in the league.
