Japan 2–1 Spain: La Roja Second, Japan First

Spain and Japan faced each other in their final group game of Qatar 2022 while both sides were playing to win. While Japan needed a victory to proceed to the knockout stage, the Spaniard needed 3 points to proceed as the group winners.

With Germany and Costa Rica playing the other game of the group, the Asians could complete their shocking run by defeating Spain after winning Germany in their first group game.

However, it didn't take long until

Spain

scored their opener through Alvaro Morata's header. The Atletico forward was starting for the first time in the tournament against

Japan

as he made sure his header hit the Japanese nets after Cesar Azpilicueta's perfect cross. Spain held to their lead for the remainder of the first half while the tension in the game resulted in three yellow cards for Japanese players.

The group's situation became chaotic as first Japan completed a comeback against Spain to secure the group's first place before Costa Rica's completed a shocking comeback against Germany through Tejeda and Vargas as they moved to second place in the group with Luis Enrique’s men back to the second place, up to face

Morocco

in the next round while Japan will face

Croatia

.
