Belgium players have an emergency meeting, admits Castagne

Leicester defender Timothy Castagne says there was a meeting between Belgium players in order for them to “get some things off their chest”

After a shock loss to Morocco, Belgium are on the verge of being eliminated from the World Cup but apparently the Belgium squad held an emergency meeting to talk things out, according to Timothy Casatgne.

Belgium

who are the second-placed team in FIFA rankings are just a step away from being eliminated from the World Cup with them having 3 points and being behind both Morocco and Croatia who both have 4 points.

There have been reports of rifts in the Belgium squad as well as off-field arguments between Kevin De Bruyne and Jan Vertonghen. The tensions grew even more when Vertonghen responded to their loss against to Morocco by saying:

''Where did it go wrong? We probably also attack badly because we are too old, that must be it now, surely?''

But Timothy Castagne reveals that the squad has now had a “crisis meeting” to hash things out, as he said: '

'I think it was very important for us to have that meeting, but it wasn’t a crisis meeting as you might have heard from some quarters. It was important to get some things off our chest and share our views, but it didn’t get out of hand. It was important to share how we felt and share our ideas on how we can improve.

''I don’t think Kevin meant anything bad. We know that Italy won the Euros with Bonucci and Chiellini at the back, so age isn’t always a factor. I don’t think we should be focusing on one or two players who might not have been playing to the best of their ability. We’re all in it together. We all know we can play better. I don’t think age is a factor. I just think we played badly.''

Castagne

admitted that Belgium had to be more united, saying:

''Yes, I think we were united as a group, but perhaps not enough. If you want to go far in the World Cup, you need to be united and you need to be able to fight together with your team-mates. Maybe we weren’t showing that enough. I think the meeting was helpful in that respect.''

Belgium will meet Croatia on Thursday and need to get a win in order to qualify. Failure to do so will result in them going out in the group stage of the World Cup for the first time since 1998.
