MLS to investigate racism in DC United - Inter Miami game

MLS announced that they will not tolerate racism in any way and will pursue their investigations seriously.

Major League Soccer has announced that it will begin an investigation into allegations that

DC United

player Taxi Fountas racially abused

Inter Miami

defender Damien Lowe.

Yesterday, Inter Miami managed to defeat its opponent with a result of 3-2, so they still have a good chance to advance to the playoffs. However, it was a strange situation on the field, and after Lowe announced that Fountas had racially abused him, the Miami players decided to leave the field if something was not done to Fountas.

Inter Miami boss Phil Neville said:

"It was a racist comment. It was unacceptable. A word was used. I think it's unacceptable in society.

"A word was used, I think, the worst word in the world. And that's it, really."

Minutes after Fountas scored his side's equalizer to make it 2-2, a scuffle broke out between him and Lowe and both players were shown yellow cards by the referee. The Inter Miami players gathered together and after a few minutes, Neville and DC United manager Wayne Rooney spoke to each other. Rooney pulled Fountas off the field and the game continued.

Inter Miami player DeAndre Yedlin said:

"If nothing was done, we weren't going to continue.

"At the end of the day, it doesn't even feel like a win because of that incredibly dark moment.

"So now, we'll see what MLS does about it. My eyes will be on that a lot, to see what kind of action they take, because it's now up to them to take action and make a stand and show this not only has no place in the game but no place in society."

MLS also announced after the end of the game by publishing a statement that they will start their investigation in this regard. The statement reads:

"MLS has zero tolerance for abusive and offensive language, and we take these allegations very seriously."
