Gareth Southgate awards Ivan Toney his first England call-up

Playing a key role in Brentford's first ever Premier League promotion, the youngster also helped the Bees survive last season as his great form finally caught Gareth Southgate's attention to give the 26-year-old his first England call-up for this coming international break.

A penalty specialist,

Ivan Toney

has managed to score 13 Premier League goals since January as

Gareth Southgate

has moved to replace injured Marcus Rashford with the

Brentford

striker in his

Nations League

squad.

England

will face

Italy

away on September 23 before hosting

Germany

three days later. However, Toney's call-up has been controversial as the

Jamaican Football Federation

last year tried to persuade him to declare his allegiance to them.

The 26-year-old striker has scored 17 top-flight goals and registered six assists in 39 appearances for the Bees since their promotion to the

Premier League

. He also scored a spectacular 28-minute hat-trick in the thrilling 5-2 at home to

Leeds United

on September 3.

Toney will replace

Marcus Rashford

in the Three Lions squad. Rashford is struggling with a muscle injury currently as he missed United's 1-0

Europa League

opening defeat to

Real Sociedad

last week and has been ruled out of their second group game against Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday. In addition, the

Manchester United

striker has been in poor form. He had his worst Manchester United season in 2021-22, with only five goals in 32 matches.
