Inzaghi and Calhanoglu believe Inter should set the targets high

Simone Inzaghi believes his team will need 10 points to reach the Champions League last-16 stage, as Bayern Munich arrive on matchday one.

Simone Inzaghi

gave Inter a 10-point goal for their tough Champions League group, and

Hakan Calhanoglu

warned that they could lose more goals by giving them away.

In Saturday's Serie A match between

Inter

and Milan, the Nerazzurri threw away an early lead and lost 3-2. Goalkeeper and captain Samir Handanovic had a lousy day in defense. Even though this is a new worry, Calhanoglu pointed to mistakes that cost the team against Real Madrid and

Liverpool

in the Champions League last season.

Madrid was hard to take a 1-0 loss at home in the group stage to the eventual winners because Inter missed a lot of chances before Rodrygo scored in the 89th minute. Then, Liverpool's two late goals against Inter at San Siro in the first knockout round made Jurgen Klopp's team one step closer to the quarter-finals.

Inzaghi's team starts with a challenging game against Bayern Munich on Wednesday. Barcelona and

Viktoria Plzen

, likely the worst team in Group C, are also there, so the competition for spots could be challenging. In the knockout rounds, only the top two players move on. Inter will play with Bayern at home, and Inzaghi said, "We need to get 10 points in this group." Even compared to last year, it is very hard to do. But Inter is a good team, and facing Bayern is a chance because Bayern is one of three or four teams that could win the trophy.

Inter managed to get 10 points from their six group games last season, but Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Sheriff were their opponents. This time, it seems more complicated to figure out how to get to ten. Calhanoglu, a playmaker in the middle of the field, said, "We dominated Real Madrid and Liverpool last year. We were winning but lost because of small mistakes that changed how the games went.

"On the field, we need to be more focused and work as a team. We've thought about what went wrong and are now ready. We're in another tough group this year, but that's how it is in the Champions League. It's great to be a part of things and play against good teams to see where we stand."

Bayern has tied its last two games in the Bundesliga, against

Borussia Monchengladbach

and Union Berlin. Now might be a good time to play them, but Bayern has often beaten teams who thought that way.

"I've watched Bayern's last two games," Inzaghi said. "No one has been able to beat us in terms of numbers. The opponents have been good at keeping them in check by being aggressive. Bayern is one of the best teams in Europe because of how hard and aggressive they work.

Inter and Bayern have met seven times in European competition, winning three apiece, with one draw. Inter got the better of Bayern in the 2010 Champions League final on neutral ground at the Santiago Bernabeu. Still, the Germans have a 100 percent winning record in away games in Italy in the rivalry (W3).

Bayern's

Sadio Mane

could become the fourth African player to reach 25 goals in the Champions League. He is currently one away, looking to join the renowned companies of Didier Drogba (44), Mohamed Salah (36), and Samuel Eto'o (30).

The former Liverpool forward effectively replaced Robert Lewandowski ahead of the Pole transferring to Barcelona. Having to face both in the group stage will test Inter's fragile backline, but Inzaghi is backing his players. "We met Mane already last year; he is a great player with a crazy intensity," Inzaghi said. "Lewandowski is another great player. We will meet them both in a month and a half: they are tough but stimulating matches."
