Sterling: “Chelsea transfer was tailor-made for my personal goals”

Raheem Sterling’s transfer from Manchester City for £45m was the Blues' first signing of the Todd Boehly era. Although the Chelsea fanbase previously launched racial abuse at Raheem Sterling during his period with the Citizens, the forward insists he had forgotten the incident.

Playing a major part in multiple domestic triumphs under Pep Guardiola,

Raheem Sterling

fell down the pecking order as he made only 23 top-flight starts last season, forcing the player to seek game time elsewhere.

On his decision to join

Chelsea

, the former Liverpool and

Manchester City

forward told a news conference:

"As a person, you strive to achieve. I felt my playing time at City was being limited for different reasons and I could not afford to waste time.

"At first, I had a few options, but this was the one that was tailor-made for my personal goals. It made a lot of sense for my family and with the direction of the club.

"I have a lot of memories and top moments at City but in the year and a bit that I was in and out of the team it made me value a lot of things."

Previously being subject to racial abuse from Chelsea fans, quizzed on whether the incident played a part in his decision-making, the

England international

answered:

"No, that is the first time I [have] even remembered it. It was nothing that played on my mind at all. I cannot let an incident from individuals reflect on the club."

Having been a key member of the Three Lions' outstanding run to the Euro 2020 finals, Sterling will hope to cement his place in Southgate's plans for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
