Women's Euro 2022: Norway's coach Sjogren resigns after group failure
The two-time European champions Norway had a lot of expectations on their shoulder before they got eliminated in the group stage of the Women's European Championship this summer.
Norway started their
Women's Euro 2022campaign with a 4-1 win over Northern Ireland before a woeful, record-breaking 8-0 loss to the hosts, England. Still able to be qualified for the quarter-finals, a 1-0 loss to Austria sealed their early exit from the competition.
It was confirmed by
the Norwegian Football Federationon Tuesday that Martin Sjogren, who had been in charge since 2016, will leave his role with his assistant, Anders Jacobson.
"Having the opportunity to lead Norway's national team for five and a half years, including three tournaments, has been a special time in my coaching career,"
Sjogren
said,
"and I take with me many good and developing experiences from my time in Norway.
"The conditions before this championship were clear, and we had high ambitions. When the results did not match expectations, it was a natural solution that we now go our separate ways."
started their campaign by winning 1-0 against Austria, then inflicting an 8-0 thrashing on Norway before concluding their group stage with a 5-0 victory against Northern Ireland. Keeping 14 clean sheets in the process, the Lionesses have conceded just three goals across those 17 games under their Dutch boss, Wiegman. They will face Spain in the quarter-finals of the tournament, as Austria, the other qualified group-mate of Norway, will face Germany.
