Barcelona’s Putellas Becomes First Woman with 100 Spain Appearances

After featuring in Spain's friendly with Italy on Friday, Alexia Putellas has become the first Spain women's national team footballer to reach 100 caps for her country.

Joining the ranks of 13 men's players who have represented La Roja more than a hundred times,

Alexia Putellas

sets a new record as she’s the only woman that has made a century of appearances for La Roja. She also scored a goal for her country to earn her side a draw as well.

The 28-year-old midfielder told reporters after the match:

"I’m happy because I never thought I would reach this mark.

"It’s the result of a lot of work through the years. Hopefully there will be many more matches to come, along with many titles as well."

Spain boss Jorge Vilda also laid praises on the midfielder:

"She’s young and, best of all, is passionate about football and understands it very well, which is not something every player has," he added.

"She has so much quality, sees things before others and executes everything with pace and style."

Putellas

enjoyed a global reputation with Spain's junior national sides, having won UEFA Women's U-17 Euros in 2010 and 2011, and coming second in the 2012 UEFA Women's U-19 Euro. She made her senior national team debut in 2012 and has since competed in three major international tournaments with the squad, including Spain's Women's World Cup start in 2015, the 2017 UEFA Women's Euro, and the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. She also has been named the best female European player of the 2020-2021 season.
