Elanga signals Ten Hag on the position he can "do more" at Man Utd

The acclaimed winger had a breakout season at Old Trafford in 2021-22, but he believes there is still more capacity to be unlocked.

Anthony Elanga believes interim

Manchester United

manager Ralf Rangnick put him in the incorrect place during the club's breakthrough 2021-22 season, with the bright youngster alerting new Red Devils coach Erik ten Tag of where he can "do more."

Last season, the highly-rated 20-year-old cemented himself as a first-team regular with

Premier League

giants, making 27 appearances in all competitions and scoring three goals.

Many of those appearances were on the right wing, with England star Jadon Sancho lined up on the left, but Sweden international Elanga has informed Ten Hag that whenever he gets the management reins this summer, he should contemplate fiddling with tactical ideas in wide positions.

A product of United's illustrious youth system, he is at his most lethal while chasing down opponents and putting them on the back foot, traits that he has demonstrated in international matches.

On Sunday, Elanga scored his first senior goal for Sweden in a Nations League match against Norway, and he feels an impressive cameo on the left flank in that match demonstrated what he is capable of.

He has told

Fotbollskanalen

: “It suits me very well.

“With United I play a lot on the right but now I get the chance to play on the left, that is my favourite position.

“I can do more there. I can go both into the pitch and on the outside.”

Sancho joined Man Utd in the summer of 2021 after four years at Borussia Dortmund, where he proved his quality.

While he spent much of his time in Germany playing on the right, the Red Devils have frequently used him on the left.

Marcus Rashford is another England international who is seen to be at his best when attacking along the flanks rather than through the center.

He does like to drift to the left, which enables him to cut inside onto his right foot, and he'll be looking to regain that spark in 2022-23 to earn a spot in Gareth Southgate's World Cup preparations in 2022.

The introduction of intriguing Argentine sensation Alejandro Garnacho, a naturally left-footed 17-year-old, has recently added to an amazing talent pool at Old Trafford, with the naturally left-footed 17-year-old another of many currently pushing for playing time on the wings.
