FIFA investigation of Ecuador could eliminate them from World Cup

Using a player with questionable credentials could lead to Ecuador's elimination from the World Cup.

After FIFA announced that they are investigating the alleged foul play for

Ecuador

's promotion to the World Cup, Chilean fans hoped for their team to participate in the 2022 World Cup.

The football's governing body announced on Monday that they are formally investigating allegations by the

Chilean Football Association

that Ecuador had falsified

Byron Castillo

's credentials.

Chile claims that Castillo was born in 1995 on his Colombian identity card, while according to documents provided by Ecuador, he was born in 1998. Castillo played eight qualifying games for Ecuador, including two against Chile, and Ecuador gained four points against La Roja.

He did not play against Peru, who finished above Chile in the intercontinental play-off spot, and FIFA asked Ecuador to provide evidence. If convicted, Ecuador could lose the points gained from matches in which Castillo featured, and five points will be awarded to Chile, finishing higher than Ecuador and will replace them in World Cup.
