Gimenez believes Atletico needs a change in defensive style
Atletico has performed very poorly in defense compared to previous seasons.
Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez has claimed that they need to change their defensive style completely after their side lost 2-0 to Athletic Bilbao.
Last night, Atletico lost three points with Mario Hermoso's own goal and Inaki Williams's goal from the penalty spot, and is currently fourth in La Liga with 61 points. If Real Betis can win their match against Barcelona, the difference between the two teams will reach 1 point within 4 weeks of the end of La Liga, and Atletico will have little chance of being in the top 4 due to the confrontation with Real Madrid. He said:
“It’s obvious that for a defender when they score goals against you it’s worrying. But we have to be realistic and know that we have a different style of play to the years before.”
“We are not being as strong when it’s time to defend and it’s noticeable. We are working so that this doesn’t happen.”
Asked about their chance of finnishing in top four, Gimenez said:
“We know it could happen, but if there is one thing that relaxes us a little it’s knowing that we depend on ourselves and when you depend on yourself, you have to do everything you can so that your last bullet doesn’t escape you.”
“It’s a beautiful opportunity to classify ourselves for the Champions League. We have to win the games that are left regardless.”
