Egypt's icon Gomaa hopeful for Salah to win an international title

Despite failing to capture the African Cup of Nations twice, the Egyptian icon believes the Pharaohs' skipper will win a title with the national side this year.

Wael Gomaa

, a former Al Ahly defender, has complimented Liverpool's Mohamed Salah as Egypt's finest player and expressed his optimism that he can win a trophy with the national side.

Salah, who recently indicated signs of retiring from international football, will win a trophy with the record African champions, according to Gomaa.

"I hope he wins a major trophy with the Egyptian national team," Gomaa said, as per

Salah has guided the Pharaohs to two Africa Cup of Nations finals, but he has yet to win a trophy with Egypt.

They were knocked out of the 2019 Afcon finals in Egypt in the Round of 16 by South Africa, before finishing as runners-up in the 2021 championships in Cameroon, when they were defeated by Sadio Mane's Senegal at the final stage.

"[Mohamed] Salah is the best player in Egyptian football history, he’s a legend and he added a lot to the national team.

"Despite being one of the best players in the world, he always shows commitment to the team and respect to everyone."

Salah described Gomaa as one of the finest players he has ever played with after they were ousted in the last round of World Cup qualifiers by Senegal.

"I played for some time with the previous generation, with Wael Gomaa and Mohamed Aboutrika, then Abdullah Al-Saeed and his generation, but I'm happy with the current generation,"

The 46-year-old former center-back went even farther to defend Arsenal's

Mohamed Elneny

for refusing to take penalties for his country.

"It’s okay for players not to take penalty kicks, some of the best players are not good with penalties," Gomaa concluded.

"It’s a huge responsibility and saying no is totally fine."
