Robertson had a few lighters thrown at him after Liverpool victory

The Reds defender shook off being attacked by Benfica fans’ projectiles during the battle between the two sides in the Champions League on Tuesday, joking: “Maybe it’ll help them stop smoking!”

quarter-final clash.

Liverpool managed to impress in their quarter-final clash with Benfica in the Champions League as they grabbed a victory in Portugal.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were set for the last four following goals from Ibrahima Konate and Sadio Mane giving them the leas in the first half.

Benfica, on the other hand, tried to close that gap through Darwin Nunez’s goal after the start of the second half and were keen on netting an equalizer before Luis Diaz secured his side’s victory.

Diaz has been mocked since his return to Portugal and the home supporters were filled with emotion.

They weren’t best pleased were they?,”

Robertson told BT Sport. “

I had quite a few lighters thrown at me so maybe it’ll help them stop smoking! Take the positives.

“We’ve seen it a lot with people getting hit, things like that. Luckily, they were all quite close to me but none of them hit me.

“They’re frustrated, I get that, but you should try and not throw stuff onto the pitch because it can hurt people. I was just trying to take the corner and get out of there as quickly as possible.”
