Oscar Tabarez sacked by Uruguay after 15 years amid poor WCQ run

(AUF) confirmed on Friday that the 74-year-old coach, who had been at the helm since 2006, will no longer sit in La Celeste’s dugout after their poor results in their last four games in World Cup qualifiers.

"[This is] a difficult decision due to present circumstances, in a commitment to the future and the achievement of the results we all want.

"We express our respect and acknowledgment to [Tabarez's] professionalism and dedication for such a long process."

Tabarez

led

to a fourth-place finish at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He has also won the 2011 Copa America.

This was Tabarez's second stint as manager. He previously led Uruguay from 1988 to 1990 and took them to the 1990 World Cup, however, they were eliminated by

in the round of 16.

The Uruguayans are currently sitting seventh in CONMEBOL's 10-team South American qualifying group. They still have four matches remaining to secure automatic qualification for the next year's World Cup in Qatar.
