Gerrard Aston Villa's first choice to replace Dean Smith
The former Liverpool captain is close to returning to the Premier League.
After his fifth defeat of the season, Smith was sacked by Aston Villa on Friday. They are just two points above the relegation zone and have not been able to achieve satisfactory results, despite the high cost of strengthening the team over the summer. After the sale of Jack Grealish to Manchester City, the club was given a good budget and players such as Emi Buendia, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings were bought.
Smith and Villa started the season with victories over Everton and Manchester City, but things gradually got worse and he was eventually sacked. Now, reports suggest that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is the club's most serious option. The former Liverpool captain had great results with the Rangers and last season led the team to its first title in a decade.
