Gareth Southgate hails Ben Chilwell after first England goal
England boss Gareth Southgate has hailed Ben Chilwell after the Chelsea defender scored his first goal for his country following a difficult summer.
Ben Chilwell
scored his first England goal as the Group I leaders moved closer to World Cup qualification with a 5-0 victory over
Andorra
on Saturday.
Despite England’s run to the Euro 2020 final, the Chelsea full-back did not play a minute for
Gareth Southgate
’s side during the tournament.
The full-back finally managed to break into the Three Lions’ squad after
Reece James
missed due to injury.
Southgate was pleased to see him on the up after a difficult few months.
"There were some nice moments, for Chilly (Chilwell) to get a goal after having such a tough time in the summer with us, I'm really pleased for him,"
Southgate
told
ITV
.
"Jack's (Grealish) first goal, Tammy, Prowsey (Ward-Prowse), Bukayo (Saka) - they are all players who haven't scored that often for England so it's a special moment for all of them.
"It was a very specific challenge, a low packed defense and we picked a team with players in it who could take that challenge on. You saw that with the link play in midfield especially."
