Pele recovering in hospital after surgery to remove tumor

Brazil icon Pele has revealed he has had surgery to remove a tumor from the right side of his colon.

The 80-year-old is recovering in the ICU following the removal of the tumor, according to his doctors at Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo.

Pele provided an update on his condition via his Instagram account on Monday, writing:

"Last Saturday I underwent surgery to remove a suspicious lesion in the right colon,"

"The tumor was identified during the tests I mentioned last week. Fortunately I am used to celebrating great victories alongside you.

"I will face this match with a smile on my face, a lot of optimism and joy for living surrounded by the love of my family and friends."

The legendary striker is considered to be one of the greatest players of all time having won three World Cups with Brazil in 1958, 1962, and 1970.

Pele officially scored 757 career goals, leaving him behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Josef Biscan on the all-time list. Brazilian club Santos however claim that number is closer to 1,000.
