Tatjana Schoenmaker bags first medal for Team SA at Tokyo Olympics
The 24-year-old brought home a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke final on Tuesday.

became the first South African woman to win an Olympic swimming medal in 21 years. The 24-year-old participated in the 100m breaststroke final on Tuesday and managed to touch the wall in 1min 05.22sec.
This was the first medal for Team South Africa at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Schoenmaker was edged out by Lydia Jacoby of the United States, who clinched the gold medal with a record of 1:04.95. American world record holder
Lilly King
won the bronze medal with a record of 1:05.54.
Having failed to secure the gold medal, Schoenmaker won’t be able to participate in the 100m-200m breaststroke double. The 24-year-old was looking to follow the footsteps of fellow South African Penny Heyns, who won the competition at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
Schoenmaker will begin her quest for gold in the 200m breaststroke heats on Wednesday.
