Maguire's father with suspected broken ribs at Wembley Euro 2020 final
Harry Maguire has spoken out about how ticketless supporters stormed security at Wembley during the Euro 2020 final, leaving his father with probably fractured ribs.
On Sunday night, the England defender's father got caught up in the chaos inside the stadium and struggled to breathe.
Maguire called what occurred
"scary"
and said his family would be
"more aware"
in the future while attending matches.
The 28-year-old, who smashed home his penalty-kick in England's shootout defeat, told
The Sun:
"My dad was in the stampede. I have not spoken with him too much but I am pleased my kids didn't go to the game.
"It was scary - he said he was scared and I don't want anyone to experience that at a football match.
"I have seen a lot of videos and have spoken to dad and my family. It was my dad and agent who suffered the most. He was struggling with his breathing afterwards because of his ribs, but he's not one to make a big fuss - he got on with it.
"I hope we can learn from this and make sure it doesn't happen again. Dad will always support me and go to the games but he will be a little bit more aware of everything going on around. We should all be more aware and learn from it.
"Things could have been a lot worse but we have to make sure it does not happen again."
UEFA launched a disciplinary inquiry following the events at Wembley Stadium during the
Euro 2020final on Tuesday.
On Monday, Football Association chief executive
Mark Bullingham
announced that the incident would be thoroughly investigated.
He blamed "drunk yobs" for attempting to enter the stadium without buying the tickets.
UEFA has accused the FA of four charges related to the chaos. A pitch invasion, item throwing, mocking the Italian national anthem, and the igniting of fireworks were all grounds for disciplinary action.
Maguire is hoping that the events of Sunday night will have no bearing on England's prospects of holding another World Cup in the future.
He said:
"Wembley is an amazing place. It has been an amazing home and the fans and the way they have acted have been unbelievable, apart from the odd few in a final.
"We need to learn, and we will - and it would be an amazing place to hold the World Cup."
