Messi doesn’t need Copa America to prove he is the best, says Scaloni

The Argentinian superstar has the chance to win his first major international trophy in the Copa America final on Saturday.

in their last step toward winning the Copa America title. The Albiceleste captain

Lionel Messi

is under immense pressure ahead of the final as he is on the verge of winning his first major title with the national team. Despite the ever-ongoing debate over picking the best footballer of all time,

Lionel Scaloni

believes winning or losing the Maracana final won’t change Messi’s status in football history.

“Win or don’t win, he will continue being the best footballer in history, he doesn’t need to win a title to demonstrate it,”

he told a press conference.

“Obviously, we want to win because we haven’t made all this effort not to break the bubble.

“In the background, whether Leo wins or doesn’t, he has already demonstrated that he is the best in history, and even the opponents recognise it.”

Messi has been a crucial player for Argentina in their Copa America 2021 campaign. The six-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored four goals and provided five assists in his six matches at the continental tournament. Messi is expected to make a decision over his future after the Copa America final. The 34-year-old is reportedly keen to stay at Camp Nou. However, the contract extension might prove to be more complex than anticipated as the Spanish giants are forced to reduce their wage bill significantly before signing a new contract.
