Denmark advance to Euro 2020 semi-finals as Dolberg strikes again

The Danes defeated the Czech Republic with a 2-1 result in their quarter-final tie on Saturday.

Denmark

faced the

Czech Republic

in their Euro 2020 quarter-final tie on Saturday. Jaroslav Silhavy made one change to the Czech side that eliminated the Netherlands last week. Pavel Kaderabek was replaced by Jan Boril, who missed his side’s last match due to suspension. On the other hand, Denmark played with the same lineup that crushed Wales 4-0 in their last-16 tie.

Kasper Dolberg

, who scored twice against the Dragons, retained his place in Kasper Hjulmand’s lineup as Yussuf Poulsen started from the bench.

The Danes started the game with confidence and got an early opener in the fifth minute. Stryger Larsen's inch-perfect corner found

Thomas Delaney

, who headed the ball past

Tomas Vaclik

from the edge of the six-yard box. Delaney had the chance to double Denmark’s lead 12 minutes later, but he was not able to convert Martin Braithwaite’s precise cross from the edge of the box.

The Czechs increased the pressure on Denmark’s defense and came close to getting the equalizer in the 24th minute. Lukas Masopust passed the ball to Tomas Holes inside the box, but

Kasper Schmeichel

managed to block the Czech midfielder’s shot by closing up the angle.

Having escaped the Czechs’ initial pressure after the goal, Denmark started their efforts to double the lead. Kasper Hjulmand’s side got their second goal of the night two minutes before the half-time whistle, where Dolberg volleyed

Joakim Maehle

’s outside-of-the-boot cross into the top right corner of the net.

The Czechs put Denmark under fierce pressure at the beginning of the second half and managed to make it 2-1 in the 47th minute. Vladimir Coufal’s searching cross was received by

Patrik Schick

, who scored his fifth goal of the tournament by steering the ball past Schmeichel from around the penalty spot.

The Czechs continued their attacks throughout the second half, but they lacked enough composure to turn the game around. Denmark created a few counter-attack chances to extend their lead, but they were not able to get the ball past Vaclik and the game ended in a 2-1 victory for the Danes.

The winner of tonight’s battle between England and Ukraine will face Denmark in the next round. The Danes will play their semi-final tie on Tuesday.
