Ex-Liverpool boss Benitez signs a three-year contract with Everton

The former Liverpool manager has been appointed as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor at Goodison Park.

Rafa Benitez

is sitting on the hot seat at

Everton

as he penned a three-year contract with the club.

According to

Goal

, the Spaniard was having positive talks with Everton earlier this month and they were eyeing the ex-

Liverpool

manager as their main target after losing interest in Nuno Espirito Santo.

During their latest pre-season campaign, Everton unveiled the 61-year-old, who will go back to the Premier League after departing Newcastle in 2019.

Benitez said on the club’s official website:

“I am delighted to be joining Everton.

“Throughout this process I have been greatly impressed by the ambition shown by the senior representatives at the Club and their desire to bring success to this historic Club.

“I believe this is a Club that is going places. I’m determined to play a big part in helping this great Club achieve its ambitions.”

A group of supporters tried to threaten Benitez by hanging banners near his house this week. The banner read 'We Know Where You Live. Don’t Sign', but the Toffees strongly condemned the act when it was taken into social media.

Outside the stadium, they wrote messages saying ‘Benitez not welcome’ as he made a name for himself working with Liverpool from 2004 to 2010.

He delivered four trophies during his time with the Reds, but in 2007, he referred to Everton as a “small club”, which raised a lot of controversies. He tried to clarify his statement four years later, saying:

"I didn't want to be disrespectful to the club. I was talking about the way they were playing, not the club.”

He is the first manager to be at the helm at both Liverpool and Everton. He managed Inter, Chelsea, Napoli and Real after leaving the Reds, but was not working since he departed Dalian Professional in January.

He will now try to bring Everton back to European qualification after they have finished the season sitting 10th.
