Southgate wants England to adapt to unexpected difficulties

Gareth Southgate’s plans for the final Euro 2020 game against the Czech Republic were hit by a big blow after Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount were forced into self-isolation.

The pair are forced into self-isolation after hugging Scotland star and

Chelsea

teammate

Billy Gilmour

, who has tested positive for the coronavirus on Monday.

The FA announced both players had tested negative in two COVID-19 tests on Sunday and Monday, but they were advised to isolate for 10 days following consultations with Public Health England.

The period of quarantine could prevent them from participating in tomorrow's game against the

Czech Republic

. They could also miss the knockout stages next week.

Speaking at a pre-match news conference, the Three Lions boss

Gareth Southgate

confirmed both players were major doubts for the Czech Republic clash.

"We don't know at the moment. There's obviously got to be quite a doubt but there's still a lot of discussions and investigations going on behind the scenes, so at the moment they're isolating and we just have to find out over the next 12 hours or so,” he said.

"We had worked with the players this morning on the training pitch, so of course then you find out as you finish that this is the situation, so I can't say it isn't disruptive of course.

"We don't really know at this point whether they might be ok for tomorrow or they could be out for 10 days, so there's a lot of unknowns frankly at this moment in time.

as examples of the unexpected difficulties that can arise during tournaments.

"Spain had a similar situation, they've ended up drawing their two games. Denmark have obviously had a tragic situation,"

he continued

.

"This is tournaments, you have to adapt, you have to respond. It's why the depth of the squad is so important and calmness around whatever's going on at any given time is critical.

"We don't have all the information so we're going to take our time to see exactly where we stand in the morning."
