Moreno hails ‘History-making’ Villarreal

Villarreal lifted the Europa League title by defeating Manchester United on penalties after their clash ended with a tie 1-1. Under Unai Emery’s reign, it is the club’s first major title in their history.

Finishing fifth in the La Liga table, Villarreal put all their focus on Europa League as they appointed the former Arsenal boss who had already won Europa League three times with Sevilla in the past.

Villarreal took the lead in the 29th-minute with a goal from Gerard Moreno before Edinson Cavani scored the equalizer for the Red Devils in the 55th-minute.

However, after a goalless extra time, Villarreal finally won 11-10 on penalties.

“It’s a dream come true,” Moreno told his post-match interview.

“We remember everything we’ve done to work toward this. Everyone deserves it; the president, the vice president. We wanted to make history in a big way and we’ve done it. This has been my best year. Individually and collectively, it’s a dream to end up with this title, to be able to score. It’s incredible, we’re on a cloud.”
