The full-back was born in Croatia and has received German citizenship recently thanks to Joachim Low and the DFB scouting team.
FIFA’s regulations suggest that switching allegiance is possible if certain conditions are met, with one being that
"at the time of being fielded for their last match in an official competition in any kind of football for their current association, they had not turned 21 years old."
The 23-year-old, however, last featured for Croatia’s U21 team when he was 22 and in a qualifier clash against Scotland in the European Championship in November 2020.
