Johnson did not intervene in NUFC takeover, insists Downing Street
Downing Street has insisted United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson did not play any part in the Saudi bid to buy Newcastle United.
The Saudi prince,
Mohammed bin Salman
, had asked
Boris Johnson
to intervene to correct the Premier League’s wrong decision not to allow a £300m takeover of
Newcastle Unitedlast year.
It led to Johnson asking one of his aides,
Lord Eddie Lister
, to investigate the proposed buyout, however, the Saudi group ended its bid to purchase the club.
The spokesman told reporters
: “This was a commercial matter for the parties concerned and the Government was not involved at any point in the takeover talks on the sale.”
Pressed on whether Mr. Johnson played any part, the No 10 official replied:
“No, the Prime Minister didn’t intervene. The Government was not involved at any point in the takeover talks.”
Asked whether media reports on the matter were wrong, the spokesman added:
“The Prime Minister asked Lord Lister to check on the progress of the talks as a potential major foreign investment in the UK.
“He didn’t ask him to intervene.”
