Deans: “We just want to keep winning games & moving up the table”
Newcastle Jets have had their Fifth consecutive unbeaten game following their 1-0 win over Melbourne Victory.
Jets coach
Craig Deans
was delighted with his side’s impressive attempt to extend their
A-Leagueunbeaten run through a 1-0 win over
Melbourne Victory.
The Jets midfielder
Angus Thurgate
scored the late winner, helping his side seal the three points.
"
We had moments where we had to really battle it out and Victory's a very good team - they're just going through a bad patch at the moment but they're still a difficult team to beat, especially here in Melbourne,"
Deans said.
"
So I'm very happy for the players - another strong effort defensively, and a little bit better than last week in terms of creating chances.
"So I'm pleased, and we just want to keep winning games and moving up the table."
Victory did not get off to a right start as they were defeated in five of their opening seven matches.
While Leigh Broxham was benched, Callum McManaman was back in action from an injury and Adama Traore was wearing the captain’s armband. Although Newcastle dominated the start of the game, they failed to take the lead in the first half.
Melbourne Victory had the chance to score in the 48th minute, but Newcastle shot-stopper Jack Duncan pulled off a great save leaving them undone.
"
We certainly give them a little bit too much respect,"
Melbourne Victory boss
Grant Brebner
said.
"
We certainly didn't get tight enough. We changed things to our favour ... but when it's a flip of a coin, who's winning games at the moment, it's not falling for us.
