Everton vanquished Liverpool for the first time since 1999

Liverpool have had their fourth consecutive defeat in the derby against Everton on Saturday.

The Reds were held to a draw in their last clash against

Carlo Ancelotti

’s side, but the goals dominated half the story with red cards, controversies on VAR decisions, and Virgil Van Dijk sustaining a season-ending injury.

Richarlison

scored the opener for

Everton

on Saturday, courtesy of James Rodriguez’s impressively guided pass, helping his side take the lead early doors.

Liverpool

centre-back Jordan Henderson had to be replaced by Nathaniel Phillips as he sustained a groin injury in the first half of the game. Although Liverpool dominated the first half, they were not able to create any clear chances.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been fouled on by Alexander Arnold, gifting Everton a penalty, and

Gylfi Sigurdsson

went on to double his side’s lead in the 83rd minute. Although Liverpool pushed to pull themselves level, their efforts were undone by the flawless shot-stopper Jordan Pickford who pulled off some impressive saves.

Everton have earned three points in their first victory over the Reds since 1999, which has seen them further close their gap with the sixth-placed Liverpool on the

Premier League

table.
