AFC U-16 and U-19 Championship will be cancelled

With the rise of the corona virus cases in the Asian countries, the tournaments will be postponed to 2023.

Considering the risk of holding the AFC

U-16

and

U-19

Championship regarding the Coronavirus pandemic, the Asian Football body has decided to cancel the matches.

These tournaments were going to be held in Uzbekistan and Bahrain. Bahrain was the host to the AFC U-17 tournament and Uzbekistan would be the host to AFC U-20 Asian Cup.

This tournament will be held in the same countries in 2023.

Few participating countries, however, had asked to postpone the tournament because of the coronavirus pandemic. The U-16 tournament was postponed already due to the pandemic.

The AFC General Secretary, Dato' Windsor John, said:

“We are grateful for the support of the hosts for these competitions who agreed with the AFC the need to safeguard the interests of all stakeholders during this time of uncertainty and taking into consideration the risks of the current pandemic.”

India was qualified for the Championship finals of the AFC U-16 in 2019. This was the ninth time for India to be qualified for the finals.

The top four U-16 teams that manage to be qualified for the finals, will qualify for the U-17 World Cup.
