Nicol Shares His Ideas on the Next Possible Liverpool Defender

Following Gomez and Van Dijk’s injuries Nicol urged Liverpool to invest properly in January transfer season and maybe look among RB Leipzig squad.

After losing two of their valuable players to injury including

Virgil van Dijk

and

Joe Gomez

former

Liverpool

player Steve Nicol believes

RB Leipzig

centre-half

Dayot Upamecano

may be the right option for the Reds were they willing to spend a lot of money. Both Van Dijk and Gomez who had to undergo knee operation will be sidelined for several months before returning to the pitch.

“Oh my goodness, [Liverpool's title chances] drop a good 20, 25 per cent from where they were, without Van Dijk,” Nicol told

ESPN FC

. “I think right now Liverpool absolutely, because of this injury, have to go out and spend a lot of money.

“Joe Gomez, at 23 years of age, has already had two major surgeries. That means the chances of it happening again rise.

“You're talking about percentages of Liverpool defending [the title], you talk about percentages of a player having another bad injury.

“So I think this forces them into it and they should go and get Upamecano.”

Others have also wished Klopp to look among Bundesliga teams and possibly find his next defender. Jose Enrique told

Stadium Astro

: “They have been talking about Upamecano, [Kalidou] Koulibaly – he would cost £70-80 million.

“They need to sign someone because you need two players for every position, always. We have been really unlucky with injuries, but you need two players in these positions.

“Upamecano is a good player. It’s difficult. There are a lot of players in Europe and I’m sure they will find someone.”
