Ronaldo becomes the most-capped national player of all time
On Thursday, Cristiano Ronaldo surpassed Bader Al-Mutawa for the most international caps by making his 197th appearance for Portugal
has broken the record for the most international caps in men's football. The Portugal captain earned his 197th cap in the opening Euro 2024 qualifier against Liechtenstein on Thursday, surpassing Kuwait forward Bader Al-Mutawa's previous record.
The top five most-capped men's footballers also include Soh Chin Ann of Malaysia (195 caps), Ahmed Hassan of Egypt (184), and Ahmed Mubarak of Oman (183).
Before the match against Liechtenstein, Ronaldo had revealed that he had thought about retiring from international football after
Portugal's World Cup quarter-final defeat to Morocco, which had seen him equal Bader Al-Mutawa's record.
However, he was included in Roberto Martinez's first squad as head coach and went on to make history by becoming the most-capped men's international footballer of all time during Portugal's opening Euro 2024 qualifier against Liechtenstein.
"My biggest wish is to be able to take Portugal as high as possible,"
Ronaldo said on Wednesday.
"I will always play my part when needed.
"Earning records is always a positive thing and it motivated me. I like to break records and will now break another special one. It makes me very proud.
"But beyond [Thursday] I still have plenty of games left. Let's see if the coach still wants to count on me to be available."
