Haaland could be greatest-ever Premier League player, says Carragher

Jamie Carragher believes Erling Haaland could be remembered alongside Thierry Henry as one of the all-time Premier League greats.

Jamie Carragher

says

Erling Haaland

could become the best player in Premier League history after getting off to a great start with

Manchester City

. Since joining Pep Guardiola's champions from

Borussia Dortmund

, Haaland has been on fire. He has scored nine goals in his first five league games for City.

This is the most goals any player has scored in their first five Premier League games. Against

Nottingham Forest

on Wednesday, the tall Norwegian became the first player since Harry Kane in December 2017 to score back-to-back hat-tricks in the league.

This season, the City striker has scored a goal every 43 minutes, on average, and Carragher thinks that fans of the Premier League are seeing something special.

"With the players, they've brought in, I'd probably say Man City had a really good window," he told Sky Sports. "They lost a lot of players who could score goals, but look at Haaland... From [Julian] Alvarez's start, he seems very good. Haaland is the first person you notice because he looks so great.

"We know we have a great player in the league, but I think we have something so special that when he's done at Man City or the Premier League, we'll talk about him in the same breath as Thierry Henry. I believe that this kid could become the best player we've ever seen in the Premier League. He is that good and off to a great start."

If Haaland scores when City goes to Aston Villa on Saturday, he would be only the fifth player in Premier League history to score in his first three away games (after Peter Beardsley, Jurgen Klinsmann, Francesco Baiano, and Alen Boksic). The 22-year-old is in great form, so he may also want to become the first player in the competition to score a hat-trick in three straight games.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is another former Dortmund striker who has moved to the Premier League. He left Barcelona for Chelsea, bringing him back with his old coach, Thomas Tuchel. Even though the 33-year-time old's at Arsenal ended badly in January, Carragher thinks his arrival at Chelsea is a good thing.

"There's no doubt that he's a good player, and I think this is a good move," he said. "People might wonder what Arsenal's role is in this since they let him go for free, and Chelsea is now paying money for him less than a year later. I think it's a good move for Chelsea, but I also think Mikel Arteta and Arsenal made the right choice. Just look at where they are now.

"We know what Aubameyang brings to the team: goals and good play. Thomas Tuchel knows him and worked with him at Borussia Dortmund. As a neutral fan, I'm glad he's in the Premier League. He is a very good player."
