Barcelona's Alexia Putellas faces 10-12 months on sidelines

Alexia Putellas, a star player for Spain and Barcelona, may not play next season because she had surgery to fix a knee ligament injury.

said.

Putellas, who won the

Ballon d'Or

, couldn't play in the Women's Euros because she hurt herself in training just three days before Spain's first game against Finland in Group B.

Even though Jorge Vilda's team won that game 4-1, the injury to Putellas is a huge blow to their chances of winning the tournament. The 28-year-old has scored 27 goals in 100 international games and led the Women's Champions League in scoring 11 goals last season.

"The FC Barcelona Medical Services are happy to report that Alexia Putellas' surgery at Hospital de Barcelona on Tuesday morning went well," began a statement on the team's website.

"The world player of the year and captain of the women's team tore the cruciate ligaments in her left knee and will be out of action for 10 to 12 months."

Putellas' injury hurts

Spain

's chances of winning its first major tournament. It also hurts Barcelona, which won all 30 of its league games last year before losing the Champions League final 3-1 to Lyon in May. The winger scored the consolation goal for Barcelona in that game.
