Jorginho explains why James didn’t take the penalty against Newcastle

The England international had the chance to complete his hat-trick, but Jorginho took the late penalty.

Chelsea defeated Newcastle 3-0 in their Premier League game on Saturday.

Reece James

displayed an incredible performance, scoring a brace in the second half to secure the three points for the Blues.

In the 81st minute, Chelsea was awarded a penalty following Karl Darlow’s foul on Kai Havertz. Reece could have completed his hat-trick by taking the penalty, but Jorginho ended up converting another spot-kick for the Blues.

In a post-match interview, the Italian star was asked about his decision to take the penalty.

“He didn’t ask.”

the 29-year-old responded.

“That’s important to be clear that he didn’t ask for anything. He just came over to support me.

“He’s amazing with both feet and he opened the game for us, which was great. It [James’ first] was a beautiful goal.”

Chelsea continue to lead the Premier League table with 25 points from their ten games. The Blues will face Malmo in their next Champions League game on Tuesday. Thomas Tuchel's side will then take on Burnley in a league game four days later.
